"You just sort of crept into my heart and made yourself at home, a little at a time. It was so gradual that I didn't even realize it was happening. I could tell myself that being so proud of you for your columns, and awards and your enthusiasm for life was just a friend being glad for another friend. I don't know how long I was lying to myself."
She gives him a watery laugh.
"And then I was afraid that my favorite reporter was going to see through that lie. He's incredibly clever that way."
