Valentine's day

Rapunzel had been busy planning, and had everything nearly perfect for her Valentine's Day dinner with Alex. She was wearing a pretty dress with something naughty underneath for later, and she'd brought up a fancy meal from the bar and set it out on the table, just waiting for the candles to be lit, the lights to be dimmed, and Alex to arrive.

She has out wine glasses and a bucket of ice, and goes to put on some soft music while she waits.

There is a knock on the door. (Yes, he has the key, but it somehow seems better to knock.) "Anyone home," he asks sweetly.

She smiles at his sweetness, making it seem like a real date. She does a little pirouette on her way to the door, and opens it with anticipation.

"Happy Valentines day!"

"Happy Valetine's Day, my love!!" He leans in for a long and soft and passionate kiss, but holds onto the large heart-shaped box in his left hand.

She kisses him back and is a little breathless by the time she steps back and accepts the box.

"Thank you! How sweet!"

Especially since Valentines day is two months past in his world, and she knows he is doing this to indulge her.

"And you look particularly nice this evening."

he's got on a fairly new white shirt with blue stripes, a red tie, suspenders, and good slacks and shoes. It's nicer than he dresses for work, even though it's the same kind of clothes.

"And look at you...very, very nice." He closes the door behind him.

"I got this in Gotham, actually."

And the bit of lace underneath...but he'll find that out later. She twirls to show off the flirty swing of the short skirt.

"The trends tend to run to the very short as far as dresses go, there. Did I ever tell you how much I love suspenders?"

"No, you didn't," he says as he takes in that little bit of skirt and those legs. "And I for one entirely endorse short dresses." He hands her the big box of chocolate. "I believe this is customary for a lover to bring his lady on this day?"

She accepts the box with a laugh.

"I believe that is the tradition! Some smart man somewhere in history knew that you can never go wrong with chocolate."

She turns to set the box down on the coffee table.

"Did you bring some wine? I've got an ice bucket on the table."

"Errrrr." He knew he forgot something. "I'll be right back!" And he hurries out the door and downstairs, and is back in a minute.

"Voila," he says somewhat sheepishly as he enters again (this time using his key). It's one of the nicer red wines he knows Raps likes.

She laughs when he rushes out, and uses the time to light the candles on the table and dim the lights a little. Not so much that they will be stumbling around, but enough to make the circle of light from the candles seems like its own enclosed space.

She glances at the bottle he brings back and kisses him softly.

"A good choice."

"I had a good teacher?" He takes in the room. It feels cozy. And romantic. And like home.

"Are we just about ready to eat, my lady?"

"Ready when you are, love."

She gestures toward the table, where plates are staying warm under silver domed lids.

"Wow. You really outdid yourself. This is as nice as any place in Gotham. Nicer." Alex pulls out Rapunzel's chair. "If you'll allow me, dear?"

"Thank you."

She takes a seat and allows him to help her push in.

"And thank you! I can't claim to have done all the work this time. I just brought it all up from the bar."

"You could have lied," he suggests playfully. "In fact, I will assume that the Bar, knowing what an amazing cook you are, took ever recipe from your shelves and did it exactly like you would have.

"Shall I see what you and the Bar concocted?" He reaches slowly for the dome before him.

"I asked for simple and delicious...steak and potatoes. Can't go wrong with that, can you?"

She removes the dome form her own plate to reveal a petite filet and a huge baked potato.

"I hope you're hungry!"

"I don't think anyone in history has ever gone wrong with steak and potatoes." He can be forgiven for not knowing about Atkins. "And of course I am hungry." He winks at her.

And then cuts off a nice piece. "Medium well. You knew!"

She winks at him and cuts into her own.

"I know all sorts of things that you like."

Her face is full of wicked amusement as she eats.

"How does it feel to celebrate Valentine's in April?"

"I don't know. Kinda funny. I mean, last year, we did that whole prank thing, and that was great. But that wasn't entirely Valentine's Day, was it? I loved it, but now..." His smile is huge and warm and comfortable. "We didn't really know each other the way we do now.

"Which i guess means it's still Valentine's Day for us, no matter what the day is, and that's what counts? Like how I celebrate Christmas in February and Halloween on New Year's Eve?"

"And I love you for it. I'd be happy to celebrate by Gotham's schedule, if it would be more convenient, but I think you're right. Any time we're together is cause for celebration."

"It is, isn't it," he says with equal parts wonder and ego. "Maybe next year we can find a way to celebrate more things there. New Year's Eve in Gotham can be...interesting." Another word for full of crime? "And if we can work something out with your hair, it's probably time you met Lynn Vega and got to come for Thanksgiving."

He tries the potatoes. Perfect, of course.

"I'd like that. If worse came to worst, we could always tell people that I have some weird disease that makes my hair grow like crazy. I've gotten good at disguising it over the years, but I've never had any good friends that didn't know about it already before."

"I think telling at least some of the truth would be nice. I don't like the idea of hiding who and what you are. I get that we have to but...well, you know I like the truth.

"And I like the idea that people can get to see you. The real you." The woman he loves and that he is going to hold onto. "Besides, with all the other supertypes, maybe they'll just think you're one of them."

"I hadn't thought of that...with all of the other strange things that happen in your world, how freaked out could people get by fast growing hair?"

She sips at her wine thoughtfully.

"My name can be the result of my 'condition'; I don't think they'd believe I was a living Fable, even if we told them."

"Any chance you would start wearing a spandex costume and fighting crime," he asks jokingly.

"If you want to try it, I'm game. It would open things up for you." For them, to travel and to enjoy life, at the very least.

She laughs.

"I might be persuaded to wear spandex, just for you, but I don't think I'd be much good at fighting crime. Growing hair is hardly a super power."

"Unless you're a supermodel?" He smiles very coyly,

"Oh, before I forget...this weekend I might be going up to New England. There are a couple of heroes I want to do some research on. People seem to like my columns about the topic, so I'm going to do some more. Wanna come along for the ride?"

"I liked the one you did on The Flash. I'd love to go. Who will you meet with?"

She may be a little nervous about not hiding her hair, but she'll cope.

"I have an old...friend is way strong...in Boston. A pompous twit of a TV reporter named Vic Sage. I might head down to the waterfront, and see where this No Face Guy showed up. And we'll stop at Ivy Town and find some witnesses to the Atom's appearances.

"I bet you'll like both places. Ivy is an old college town, lots of antique shops. Maybe I'll get you another Valentine's Day gift?" He's smiles evermore at the idea of a road trip to follow this holiday.

"I can have fun anywhere we end up!"

There is a definite glint of mischief in her eyes.

"You know you don't have to buy me gifts...though it would be nice to find a nice picture for the short hallway from the guest bath to the other bedroom in the apartment."

"Yeah, but it's fun. Besides, I read someplace that sometimes it's good to get gifts for no reason.

"And what do you say we book a luxury suite at the Ritz in Boston? One with a view. And a bot tub." He can have as much of a glint of mischief, though hers is, he would admit, sexier.

He's close to done with his steak.

"That sounds absolutely sinful. Let's do it. I haven't been to Boston for at least a hundred years...I guess it's changed a bit since then. It might not even be the same Boston from the one in my world."

"Only one way to find out, darlin'. But the Boston I know has a few historic sites they preserve. Those would probably be the same." He's tempted to ask if she remembers the Revolution, but somehow that seems a bit rude (even if she's never shy about her age).

"And there's a really nice park near the Ritz. We can take a long walk, yes?"

"It sounds like a plan to me."

She finishes with her dinner and gives him and inquiring look.

"Would you like some dessert?"

He gets up and moves to behind Rapunzel, and begins to massage her shoulders. "What do you have in mind?"

She laughs, and leans back against him.

"I have some chocolate mousse in the fridge, but that can wait, if you'd like your present first..."

"Oh boy. That's a tough choice. Maybe we can take the mousse to the bedroom?" He runs his hair through her hair, which is getting close to a length suitable for swimming in.

"I like the way you think, Mr. Knox."

She smiles up at him with a wink.

"Two treats at the same time!"

"Yup. But Valentine's Day deserves something special, dontcha think?" Alex moves around to the side of Raps' chair and gently takes her arm. "Shall we?"

She gets to her feet and let him escort her to the bedroom. It's going to be a very pleasant night, indeed.
